Guidelines for Medication at School

To maintain a safe environment for all children, we adhere to strict guidelines regarding medication. We can administer both prescription and some over-the-counter medications provided by parents/carers (e.g. paracetamol and antihistamine), provided the following conditions are met:

• Written Consent Required: We cannot administer any prescribed medication without a signed Parental Consent Form detailing the exact dosage and timings.
• Original Packaging Only: All medication brought into school must be in its original container, in-date, and clearly labelled with the child’s name and explicit administration instructions. We cannot accept loose tablets or decanted liquids.
• Safe Handover: All medication must be handed in to Student Services. Students must not carry medication in their school bags (with the exception of agreed emergency items like inhalers or adrenaline auto-injectors).
• Adrenaline auto-injectors and inhalers: Students must carry their own inhalers and EpiPens and spares to be kept in Student Services.
• School Discretion: For safety reasons, the school will not administer aspirin unless it has been explicitly prescribed by a doctor. If a child requires frequent or daily over-the-counter medication, we will ask you to provide a medical note or work with us to create an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) and supply the medication.

Long-Term Conditions & Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs)

If your child has a long-term medical condition such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, or severe allergies (anaphylaxis) we require you to complete an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) and provide an allergy/asthma/diabetes care plan along with the medication.

This plan details exactly what support your child needs, their triggers, what to do in an emergency, and who is responsible for their care. If your child is diagnosed with a new condition, please contact our medical lead as soon as possible.
