Year 12 students were given the unique opportunity of visiting HMP Maidstone and experiencing a tour of a fully functioning, working Prison. The tours were held over two days, to ensure the upmost security and safety to the students and staff attending, as well as being a manageable sized group for the Prison to risk assess.
The students were shown about life inside Prison walls, how society works, how behaviour is not only punished, but rewarded as well as where the Prisoners work. The tour included walking through three vastly differing housing units, known as “Wings ”, from the induction wing to the largest and most volatile wing. Prisoners were all behind their doors, with only music heard by the students from the inmates behind them. As well as the housing units they visited the servery, the tranquillity garden, the carpentry workshop and the church which welcomes and facilitates all the religions that a Foreign National Prison would have, including Muslim, Judaism, Rastafari as well as different versions of Christianity.
The students asked the Senior Officer questions, which were all answered without sugar coating as the Senior Officer promised he would, which the students found enlightening, surprising and sometimes eye opening.
