Christmas can be an expensive time for everybody. For those already on a tight budget, with the added expenses of increased winter fuel bills and the extra challenges Covid-19 has created, many families could struggle. Alongside the pressure to buy Christmas presents these circumstances can plunge many people into crisis, leading them to make difficult choices.

In response to this need, Forms in all Year groups across Holcombe Grammar have spent the last 12 days of term collecting donations for the Family Food Bank.

The charity was set up in 2012 and has expanded across Kent to include Medway, Maidstone, Gravesend and Swale. It is part of The Children & Families Group, which provides a number of child and family related services in Kent including childcare and children’s centre services. The Family Food Bank is one of the services that provides help to support families and reduce the impact of child poverty in our local community.

Holcombe teachers, students and the wider staff body gathered a different tinned food item each day of the 12 tins of Christmas campaign. These were specifically called for because they are often the least donated products. In addition, packets of pasta, rice, sweets and biscuits were also donated.

A Family Food Box costs £8.50 and will feed a family of four, two meals a day for five days. Our wonderful school community pulled together to donate £316.35 which means that 37 families will be fed this Christmas!

Well done to all who took the initiative to donate, collect and campaign for this appeal. We are very proud to be such a community minded school and are very aware that some of our own students and staff benefit from the Family Food Bank support. Thank you all for your generosity, we wish you a very Happy Christmas.
