Founder’s Day at Holcombe is always a special occasion – but 2017 will be remembered as one of the best.
Following form activities and an inter-house quiz – the entire Holcombe community made their way onto the field to either participate in or support their peers for the athletics events. Mr R Gardiner was overseeing the last of his 29 Sports Day events and he – along with the rest of the school – witnessed some close encounters and exhibitions of both sporting excellence and persistence. The winning house this year were Guardian.
While some students bounced up on down on the range of inflatable experiences at lunchtime – other students set up their fete stalls ready of the afternoon (every form had one). From guessing baby photos to counting balloons in a car; there was plenty to do. Throwing wet sponges at teachers in the stocks certainly attracted great numbers and raised the most money of all the stalls – but the main afternoon attraction was undoubtedly the inter-house tug of war in which Barlfeur came out strongest. The cream of the students then lined up to contest a willing band of teachers and staff who, through grit and determination, actually came out on top after a long struggle.
Evening events saw the extended Holcombe family help to create a genuine celebratory atmosphere. Parents, families and staff enjoyed the good weather as they ate together, took part in competitions and enjoyed the music provided by Holcombe’s talented student musicians and orchestra – with a musical cameo from some staff.
Thanks must go to the Holcombe Association who (quite apart from arranging and organising entertainment and hospitality) provided refreshments and competitions all day.
