Holcombe create a buzz at the Spelling Bee

Holcombe came so very close to winning the first annual TSAT Medway Spelling Bee for 2016. But for a dramatic tie-break the trophy would be in the Holcombe trophy cabinet until next December.

The Year heats provided two Holcombian winners in the shape of our captain Matthew Exley (Year 11) and Chris Chacko – who got Holcombe off to a flying start by spelling his way to victory in the Year 7 heat. Trials had taken place all term to decide the best spellers from each year group and our team line up was completed by Tyler Diaper, Raphael Iwuji, Tal Murphy and Emily Crowley.

New Horizons Children’s Academy opened the event with an exhibition Spelling Bee for Year 4 before the Secondary Schools competition was kicked off by The Victory Academy, who proved to be excellent hosts. The branding for the event was designed by our own Alistair Taggart (Year 12).

The newly opened Quarter Deck building provided a suitably grand backdrop as Team Holcombe prepared to spell it out against the other schools. By the end of the contest Holcombe and Rochester Grammar School were deadlocked on 144 points. They would be separated by a head-to-head play off between the captains.

Rochester Grammar’s victory in sudden death circumstances did not prevent Holcombe being immediately gracious in defeat. Captain Matthew Exley led his team up to the Rochester girls to shake hands and congratulate them on their victory. It was a gesture that captured perfectly the spirit of the Medway Spelling Bee.

The team is now looking forward to interacting with other schools in the upcoming Spelling Gyms and have already resolved to be Medway Spelling champions for 2017.
